My only complaint about this scene, and this is representative for the movie on the whole, is that in the book I remember it reading another situation that a loving encounter. I could be wrong. It's been a while since I read the book.
Oh the love it speaks of is the fulfillment of the deepest inner self. It is a song and a movie wed in perpose to draw an ancient picture of the most sacred human dream, that of the true pairing of soulmates. The tears come from knowing the anguish of being incomplete, but in this dream joy stands like a shining tower against all storms and we cry out to it to send our brave hope back to keep it safe, to keep it's fires lit.
